Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-lowlatency

rebooting won't work - the machine freezes after shutting the system down (the black progress bar goes to the end), the only way to get it to boot is holding down the power button for 10 seconds to turn it off, and turn it back on (the Dell case doesn't seem to have a proper Reset button).

Only a reboot is affected, shutting the machine down (I mean, halt instead of reboot) works correctly.

Note that, although closed source nvidia driver is loaded, the same thing also happens without the driver (it doesn't seem to be a bug in the closed source module). Same thing happens starting from Feisty desktop CD (live).

Kernel image installed is:

ii linux-image-lo 2.6.20.16.28.1 Low latency Linux kernel image

Another update, after further testing/several reboots:

- halt works, both with HD install and liveCD (I was wrong in my initial description!)
- reboot doesn't work, neither with HD nor liveCD of Feisty; it hangs the machine to the point of having to hold the power button pressed for 10 seconds - no key combination (like changing consoles) seems to work, probably because the system is fully shut down (awaiting the system reset which for some reason doesn't happen)
- I haven't found any interesting log entries, perhaps because all filesystems are already unmounted when the system hangs

I have yet to test it with 7.10.

I can make it reboot successfully by adding "reboot=b" to the grub kernel line in menu.lst:

Krzysztof Foltman (kfoltman) wrote :

Yes, reboot=b helps. Thanks.

BTW: doing it the way that Mark Favas pointed out is not the optimal solution - because it doesn't survive running the update-grub script.

I've found that the more bulletproof way would be to add it in the commented out (!) kopt line, and run update-grub. Like this:

# kopt=root=UUID=4efbf7b3-1188-4769-8e69-e9e131ac1936 ro reboot=b

Yes, it's a commented out line and in spite of that, it seems to be used by update-grub for generating the proper entries. Luckily it's all well documented in the "stock" menu.lst.

Any plans for a permanent fix (I mean, one that makes reboot work properly out-of-the-box, without messing with config files), in feisty or gutsy?

Thanks to everyone who is testing and confirming this bug, but please do so on Gutsy. We will not be fixing this in Feisty or backporting.

Also, when debugging/triaging kernel bugs please follow: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies

This report is fairly complete, but please submit the full 'lspci -vvnn' rather than just 'lspci' and please use the attachment option rather than pasting it in. Thanks!

Setting a bug back to New is almost never the right thing to do. It should remain at Incomplete if more information has been requested or moved on to Confirmed or Triaged when the appropriate information has been provided.

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Okay. I will test it when Alpha5 is released - the machine in question is still running Feisty so trying 2.6.27 kernel might not be trivial (I suspect some user-space stuff might be incompatible).

Hi All,

There is a serious bug which may affect some people subscribed to this report so I wanted to pass along the information. Due to an unresolved bug in the e1000e driver in the 2.6.27 Linux kernel, this driver/kernel should not be used on Intel ethernet hardware supported by the e1000e driver (Intel GigE). Doing so may render your network hardware permanently inoperable.

Older Intel ethernet hardware which uses the e1000 driver is not affected by this; however, some hardware which used the e1000 driver in previous Ubuntu releases, such as hardware that uses a PCI Express bus, has been moved from e1000 to e1000e in the latest kernel releases. If in doubt, do not use this driver/kernel and subscribe to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/263555 to be notified when the bug is fixed.

Thanks.

Hi All,

Just wanted to post an update. I recently was able to test a patch for the reboot issue on a Dell Dimension 9200. I've subsequently submitted this patch to the Ubuntu kernel team mailing list and it was accepted. I'm setting this bug to Fix Committed.

The issue went away for me w/ Intrepid (I was only running Hardy for a minutes before upgrading again due to some file system corruption issues). I'm running 2.6.27-10-server. What's your kernel version? If you don't know please post the output of "uname -a". Thanks.

Yes, I have a Dimension 9200. Running Intrepid w/ all updates & have the latest BIOS Version: 2.5.3. I can shutdown, but not restart.

reboot=b fixes the issue. I'd prefer the necessary changes make it into the kernel as I administer several of these machines.

Just pasting the upstream git commit id which should resolve this issue. I'll also approve the Jaunty nomination as it should qualify for a Stable Release Update (ie low risk of causing a regression). Thanks.

upstream patch c5da9a2bb24a7928c39495cdabf98d3f7931bde5 is in the current Karmic kernel. This patch however is an entirely different fix for a Dell DXP061 and should have been opened as an entirely separate bug. The original report was for a Dell Dimension 9200 and has already been fixed. As a result I'm reclosing this bug as Fix Released. If the owner of the Dell DXP061 still needs this resolved for Jaunty, please open a new bug. Thanks!
