ubuntu 10.10 is able to suspend/resume the same machine when using nvidia drivers (but it fails when using vesa).
ubuntu 14.04 fails in both cases.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.14 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

finally, i found some time, and tried suspending with the most recent mainline kernel for trusty (which at this time is http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.15-rc2-trusty/ ) and it behaves the same (except that it is not compatible with nvidia drivers from xorg edgers so i can't test if nvidia is better than vesa in this case)

i also did the same starting in recovery mode, then from the root promot (staying in text mode) removed most kernel modules and called pm-suspend - and the result was still the same.
