Bug Description

Hi,
I'm trying to connect an external screen to my thinkpad T420s. I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 and here is the output of xrandr:

$ xrandr
Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1600 x 900, maximum 32767 x 32767
LVDS1 connected primary 1600x900+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 309mm x 174mm
   1600x900 60.0*+ 40.0
   1440x900 59.9
   1360x768 59.8 60.0
   1152x864 60.0
   1024x768 60.0
   800x600 60.3 56.2
   640x480 59.9
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
VIRTUAL1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

LVDS1 is the LCD-display on the laptop. This is the output of lspci:

$ lspci | grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF119M [NVS 4200M] (rev ff)

The screen recognises that something is plugged into the DisplayPort but Ubuntu is unable to send output to it. It's probably related to the whole dual graphics card thing.

Thank you for reading this bug!

The results are in: I was unable to boot the daily image to desktop with modesetting turned on, the OS froze just as it reached the desktop; ctrl-alt-f1 didn't take me to a TTY. With modesetting off I was able to reach the desktop but the display settings tool didn't display any external screen with a screen connected over DP and xrandr showed nothing interesting at all.

Rovanion, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available from the very top line at the top of the page from http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/?C=N;O=D (the release names are irrelevant for testing, and please do not test the daily folder)? Install instructions are available at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds . This will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue.

If the latest kernel did not allow you to test to the issue (ex. you couldn't boot into the OS) please make a comment in your report about this, and continue to test the next most recent kernel version until you can test to the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this issue is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon, next to the word Tags, located at the bottom of the report description:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Where X, Y, and Z are numbers corresponding to the kernel version.

If the mainline kernel does not fix the issue, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-X.Y-rcZ

Please note, an error to install the kernel does not fit the criteria of kernel-bug-exists-upstream.

Once testing of the latest upstream kernel is complete, please mark this report's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results.

Thank you for your understanding.

I was able to test with the latest 4.3 rc3 kernel. The output of xrandr is no different to that above and neither lxrandr nor arandr was able to detect an external screen as they usually are when I plug them in on the VGA port.
