Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.13 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

20Feb2014 - ~1800 (Zone -8) Tested linux-image-3.14.0-031400rc3-generic; both before and after the software update process. Mainline kernel did not fix this bug on the (Gateway) GT5628;
tag= 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'. (Don't really know how to enter a tag.)

Comment - The Gateway 5628 seems to have some odd behaviors - coming out of suspend the computer restarts, the monitor does not come out of the sleep state, and their is no response to keyboard (non-usb connection) or usb connected mouse.
Other oddities are - it is not possible to enter a password using the hardware keyboard until (for example) the audio icon at the upper left is clicked on and off; the update manager will advise a crash and all the while keep working to completion; it typically whines about udisks; and it does not power off on shutdown (restart ok). Some of these behaviors (udisk and shutdown) occur over multiple Ubuntu versions.

Trusty Tahr is installed on an external drive.
When operated on a "trusty" 8 year old Dell XPS400, the suspend feature works properly (- no hitches on other things either).
When operated on an HP6600f, the suspend feature does not come out with an active GUI; a terminal can be accessed.
