Bug Description

External screen on ASUS Taichi21 ultrabook doesn't show anything. The backlight is always off also. Both screens are being recognized by OS, and can be managed, but external screen is off, no matter which options are chosen. Tested with 3.8 repository kernel, and with 3.13.0-0311300rc3 mainline kernel.

As I wrote in my first post, I did test it with 3.13-rc3 mainline kernel. It is the latest one presented.

It does occur on any release I tried. 12.04, 12.10, 13.04.

I guess we have a misunderstanding here. Perhaps the word "external" wasn't the right choice. We are talking about Taichi 21, (http://www.asus.com/ru/Notebooks_Ultrabooks/ASUS_TAICHI_21/) the notebook with two screens, one on each side of the lid.
Those can be managed in different ways with special button on the keyboard. Screens can be switched, mirrored etc. When the lid is closed notebook can be used as a tablet. Under Ubuntu, screen management button doesn't work. It need some proprietary ASUS driver I think.
I have no idea, what kind of interface is being used to connect those screens.
And I don't really see any point in testing releases which were out even before this notebook hit store shelves.

SOIMiMozO, thank you for testing Lucid. Could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . This would allow for testing of the latest userspace and keyboard input code available from Ubuntu. If the issue remains, could you please just make a comment to this?

SOIMiMozO, the issue you are reporting is an upstream one. Could you please report this problem through the appropriate channel (may want to start with linux-input for the button) by following the instructions _verbatim_ at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel#KernelTeam.2BAC8-KernelTeamBugPolicies.Overview_on_Reporting_Bugs_Upstream ?

Please provide a direct URL to your post once you have made it so that it may be tracked.

Axel Hübl, thank you for your comment. So your hardware and problem may be tracked, could you please file a new report with Ubuntu by executing the following in a terminal while booted into a Ubuntu repository kernel (not a mainline one) via:

There are several issues with this laptop. The outer screen is one.

Others are:

The right-click button does not work on the touch pad, so I use a wireless mouse as a work around.
The mini-vga port does not work fully with an HP 23" IPS LED screeen. No work around yet. I`ll try the mini HDMI port when I get the right cable.
You can boot in touch with the lid closed but there is no touch keyboard to enter your password.
Does the stylus work? Don`t know yet.
The screen toggle key does not work.

However,

Both sets of volume keys work as does the mute key.
The wireless toggle key works.
The brightness keys work.
The snooze key works.
The screen hide key works.

Should I post each of these as a bug?

Regards

Steve

My laptop is back, sorry it took so long.
One question here.
I'm trying to follow instructions provided here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Upstream/kernel#KernelTeam.2BAC8-KernelTeamBugPolicies.Overview_on_Reporting_Bugs_Upstream

But have no idea, who I should mail this report to.
Should it be HARDWARE MONITOR DRIVER maintainer? If it is, there like four or five maintainers, should I email them all?

SOIMiMozO, great question, but I'm stumped on this one. I would contact the Ubuntu Kernel Team and see what they think -> https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam#Communications .
