You may need to run the following:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then re-install the package.

If that does not resolve your issue, please mark the bug as "Confirmed"

Tried the above sequence of commands.
Twice.
Did not help.
I even deleted all downloaded files by hand. No success.

I still get the following error message:

   Unpacking linux-image-3.11.0-13-generic (from .../linux-image-3.11.0-13-generic_3.11.0-13.20_i386.deb) ...
This kernel does not support a non-PAE CPU.

The previous kernel version (which apt does try to update) is Ubuntu 3.11.0-12.19-generic 3.11.3

My CPU is an old Pentium-M, running on a TOSHIBA PORTEGE M200/Portable PC, BIOS Version 1.30 03/15/2004.

Found the solution here:

It consist in principle in adding the three letters pae to your cpuinfo to trick the installer to complete its work.
The pentium M seems to not flagging this, but does support PAE kernels. ( I hope).
Anyway, after adding these letters the apt-get install -f worked and my system is running fine now.

What I do not understand is why the original install worked. Shouldn't the installer not use the same logic as the later apt-get?
So I leave this issue open for now.
