Bug Description

I select "Suspend" from the ghear icon on the top left hand side of the indicators bar, wait from a fiew secons (20-30) to half an hour, press the power button again.
My PC does not resume correclty from suspension, it looks like it is resuming, hard disk starts working and it sounds it is resuming but everything on the video freezes, I get just a black screen, have to reboot manually by pressing the power button.
I am currently running Trust Tahr with all updates.
This is my hardware: http://phillw.net/hardware/kuDwMTTb.
I have updated my BIOS firmware and followed the instructions here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingKernelSuspend.
I am attaching dmesg file and /proc/acpi/wakeup file.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report[0]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

Please follow the instructions on the wiki page[0]. The first step is to email the appropriate mailing list. If no response is received, then a bug may be opened on bugzilla.kernel.org.

Once this bug is reported upstream, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-reported-upstream'.

Yes I think the bug used to occur also in Raring, but I will have to check as I am not sure, I will also do this.

I tested suspension on Saucy (kernel 3.11.0-12) and it works.
So I tested various Tahr kernels and found that kernel 3.12.0-031200rc7 works, not completly, but my PC resumes from suspension, not immedialty, but like after a minute (more or less), I am asked to insert my password, but when I am logged on all the programs that were opened before suspension are now closed, network connection is missing, have to input "sudo service network-manager restart" to get network connection back.
The same happens with kernel 3.12.0-031200rc6 instead 3.12.0-031200rc5 and rc4 do not work.

At this point do I still have to report the bug upstream ?
Let me know and I will do it if I need to, thanks.

Thanks for the update. Probably no need to report the bug upstream, since the latest kernel does not exhibit the bug.

Resuming after suspension does not work anymore.
I have Trusty with all updates installed.
After resuming my PC freezes and cannot do anything but press power button to reboot.
After reboot I get Xorg and Linux image crash report.

Did this just start happening again after a recent update in Trusty? I recall we confirmed 3.12.0-031200rc7 resumed from suspend ok. Can you see if 3.13-rc8 also has the issue:

@ Joseph: I do not exactly know when it started again, did not use suspension for a while.

I had a continuing problem, intermittant, with 13.10 resuming from a suspend: login screen would freeze, but at least then I could do a "Switch User" and could get back into my session. With 14.04, that option is no longer available, and now the whole system seems to freeze. I'm using nvidia graphics, which seems might be the issue.

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote : Test with newer development kernel (3.13.0-24.46)

Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report on this issue.

However, given the number of bugs that the Kernel Team receives during any development cycle it is impossible for us to review them all. Therefore, we occasionally resort to using automated bots to request further testing. This is such a request.

With the recent release of this Ubuntu release, would like to confirm if this bug is still present. Please test again with the newer kernel and indicate in the bug if this issue still exists or not.

You can update to the latest development kernel by simply running the following commands in a terminal window:

    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

If the bug still exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Confirmed. If the bug no longer exists, change the bug status from Incomplete to Fix Released.

If you want this bot to quit automatically requesting kernel tests, add a tag named: bot-stop-nagging.

Thank you for your help, we really do appreciate it.

During the past week, this issue has reappeared: upon resume from a system suspend, sytem initially starts, but freezes with blank screen, and does not respond to Crt-Alt-F1 or any other input. Associated with this problem, I presume, was a failure the wine software, requiring its re-installation to operate again. I have performed the "apt-get update, dist-upgrade" with no change in behavior. This has not affected two laptops running Xubuntu, Compaq V6501NR and Toshiba Satellite A105. Multiple reports have been submitted as a part of each reboot required to restart.
