Bug Description

Ubuntu 13.10, release: 13.10
xorg: Installed: 1:7.7+1ubuntu6

Have you experienced just one lockup, or have you had a series of these lockups?
- I had several lockups.

If you've had several, how often does it occur? Every few hours? Once or twice a day? Couple times a week?
- Couple times a week.

When did you first notice it?
- Around a year ago.

Shortly after upgrading?
- Can't remember, could be after the 12.10 upgrade.

After updating?
- Don't think so.

After changing compositing (Desktop Effects) settings?
- Never changed these.

Under what conditions does it seem most likely to reproduce?
- Undetermined, it happens during normal OS usage. It doesn't seem to happen when the laptop is idle.

Only at boot time?
- No, it can also happen after, let's say, several hours of working on the laptop.

When resuming from suspend or hibernate?
- I never suspend or hibernate the laptop.

Only when using compositing (Unity, et al)
Yes, it never happened when in a tty.

When changing resolution or enabling/disabling monitors
- I don't change the resolution or enable/disable monitors.

When the screensaver (or power saving mode) kicks in
- The laptop continues working properly when the screensaver or power saving mode kicks in.

Visiting particular web pages or loading particular files
- Not a particular web page, but it happens when I use FireFox, Google Chrome or Thunderbird.

Switching between desktops
- I never do this.

When performing a specific sequence of actions (List them!)
- I don't have a reproducable situation.

Mondane, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER

Thank you for your understanding.

The problem is still there, just happened after playing 1 minute with the interface after login. All updates are installed.

Can I test the ISO when running as live CD or must I reinstall the laptop and can I replace REPLACE-WITH-BUG-NUMBER with anything?

Mondane, live environment would be fine for now. You would need to run the following in it:

apport-collect -p xorg 1247624

Please ensure you have xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for attaching additional debugging information.

Just tested and the problem still occurs. I ran the command you gave, but I don't know if files are uploaded. The python script showed errors in the terminal.

Incidentally, I found steps which have reproduced the problem 10 out of 10 times:

- open dash
- search for 'term'
- start the 'Terminal'
- enter the following command: 'dmesg | less'
- scroll the text using the cursor keys
- within a few lines scrolled, the screen goes black

Could it have something to do with the Terminal being partial transparent and there is a regression in that part of the driver.

NB The live version I tested:

Ubuntu 14.04 LTS "Trusty Tahr" - Alpha i386 (20140123)

Well, using these steps to reproduce with a live CD, I went all the way back to 12.0.4.3 LTS. Same thing happened. Since I know for a fact that version worked properly for at least a year, I sadly conclude some hardware part must have died.

Unless you want me to do more debugging, you can close this ticket.

Just out of curiosity, I also tried 11.10, same problem persists. I'm pretty sure it's a hardware problem now.

I ran apport-collect again with the 14.04 release image. No luck, the error I mentioned earlies still occured. Only difference is the position in UnicodeDecodeError:

In my earlier attempt, the position was 27066

Mondane, as per the kernel call trace noted in https://launchpadlibrarian.net/155725117/dmesg.txt this would appear to be a linux kernel issue. Hence, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available (3.15-rc6) following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-3.15-rc5

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
