I am encountering the same problem here. Very rare (happens only a couple of times per day), but it just re-occurred while deleting messages in my Inbox in evolution. Grrr.

I am running the stock xorg config for Gutsy (I have Xgl running on DIsplay :1.0 ) on an Asus laptop with old sk00l centrino and using a USB keyboard. Dmesg shows nothing interesting (events are from days before the last repeat event).

I have had instances of this bug in Evolution, Pidgin and Firefox. I have been lucky not to have it happen in scite yet (where I edit my source code).
