You may need to run the following:

sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update

Then re-install the package.

If that does not resolve your issue, please mark the bug as "Confirmed"

Same as Bug 1233720
I tried:
sudo apt-get install -f
sudo apt-get clean
sudo apt-get update
but that didn't helped. I also tried repair the package catalog in software center but it couldn't repair anything.
Apt-get doesn't let me install enything before I repaire the package catalog. Should I purge linux-image-3.8.0-31-generic to be able to install enything at all?

I tried fixing broken apt-get -f install
purging, removing the package and nothing helped. I found one working solution in a forum which bypasses the broken package.

If anyone needs installing anything after this bug occured (while we are waiting for fix) you need to temporary bypass the broken package in doing the following:

in the terminal open dpkg's status file
gksudo gedit /var/lib/dpkg/status

remove all packages containing the words linux, generic and raring
then you will be able to install with apt-get as usual.
Please inform me if this doesn't help.

Edit:
don't remove all packages containing the words linux, generic and raring !!!
basically just remove the packages linux-image-generic-lts-raring and linux-image-3.8.0-31-generic and another package witch is similar to these two (have forgotten the exact name).

Update:
After I deleted 3 packages from the dpkg's status file I was able to update again. I reinstalled dpkg, then I installed synaptic and checked all the ticks in "Other Sources" in the repositories. Then I changed the repositories server to server for Germany "de.archive.ubuntu.com" and reloaded package information. After rebooting I opened update manager and it asked me again to make the same update I did before the bug occured. The Update ended successfuly this time.
