The adding of acpi_backlight=vendor into grub boot option FIXED the problem in my Dell Inspiron 15R. I'm using the 3.11.0-9-generic 64 bits kernel.

Without the proposed fix, the only way I have found to turn brightness to MAX was setting the config below as ROOT:

                       echo 4882 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

(the previous default value of /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness was 574)

Nicolas Devillers, please do not solicit non-original reporter comments about a different bug report. This bug is focused solely on "[Dell Inspiron 15R 5521] Can't toggle backlight brightness".

Hence, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily kernel folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.12-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Nicolas Devillers, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please just make a comment to this.

Christopher,

This bug is indeed still an issue on the latest 13.10 kernel : Linux 3.11.0-14-generic. I'll try to check with upstream soon but didn't find time for that lately. However, unfortunately I don't think upstream kernel provide change relevant to fix this issue.

As (probably) a large number of user on linux right now, I'm using the following workaround to handle this issue:

'echo "4590" > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness' as root

another option might be to use the following xrandr command:

xrandr --output [yourscreendevice]

Nicolas Devillers (nicolas-devillers) wrote :

xrandr --output [yourscreendevice] --set Backlight 80

However, in my case (maybe because I have 2 video adapter [cpu/amd] ) the latter xrandr command is equivalent to write in /sys/class/backlight/acpi_video0/brightness which doesn't work.
