Bug Description

Ubuntu 12.04 boots to a black screen after regular package updates. Kernel based modesetting did work before on this machine (with Intel i830M chipset)

Unfortunately the last update I did on the machine was on Feb 19 2013. So the package to blame could have been released between February 19th and July 3rd 2013.

When I boot with the "nomodeset" parameter in GRUB the machine boots into X normally, however the "VESA" driver is used instead of "i830M" like before.

Release: Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1198287/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1198287

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

I don't know what that apport-collect command sends and I don't want to run it at the moment.

I tested the older kernels and the issue apperead with linux-image-3.2.0-48.
The previous version 3.2.0-45 works.

The behaviour does not seem to be consistent. Sometimes a black screen appears during boot but sometimes there is a graphical KMS output but the machine hangs anyway.

In the latter case the last lines before it hangs (with a blinking cursor) are:

vesafb: mode is 1024x768x32, linelength=4096, pages=0
vesafb: scrolling: redraw
vesafb: Truecolor: size =8:8:8:8 shift=24:16:8:0

I would give you the dmesg output, but I can't find any from the unsuccessful boots with the affected kernel in /var/log.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.10 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I can say that 3.8.0.26.25 works, installed via the linux-generic-lts-raring package.

The quantal kernel 3.5.0.36.42 doesn't (with different kind of behavior: artifacts instead of black screen).

(I have not tested in-between versions nor 3.10)
