It's hard to believe that a latency of 1 ms is usable but a latency of 2 ms (or even 1.5 ms) is not.
The difference between the current kernel and 3.5 is that the driver in 3.5 violated the hardware requirements in the EHCI spec. It may have worked for you, but the result was by no means guaranteed.
