Bug Description

Hi,

I get the following warning in the dmesg:

[ 19.016094] WARNING: at /build/buildd/linux-3.8.0/drivers/gpu/drm/i915/intel_display.c:1028 intel_wait_for_pipe_off+0xe2/0x1a0 [i915]()

Also newer kernel from kernel ppa gives this warning.

I dont know if this is related but sometimes after a reboot during booting I get the following stuck message and X doesn't start then.

May 24 14:28:27 kernel: [ 4.217459] [drm:intel_cpt_verify_modeset] *ERROR* mode set failed: pipe 0 stuck

Full warning:

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.10 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Is see this error comes only when I boot up with 2 external displays. With only one I dont get the error. So it's releated with dual display.

so in 3.10 latets ppa it's is still in there:

Dennis Kruyt, as per http://support.ts.fujitsu.com/Download/ShowFiles.asp an update is available for your BIOS (2.07). If you update to this, does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Thank you for your understanding.

I'm having this issue on both precise and raring on ThinkPad X201.
This issue only appears when external display attached to DisplayPort.

The behavior is consistent with stock/mainline kernel with stock or intel linuxgraphics drivers (3.8.0-26-generic, 3.8.0-27-generic, 3.8.0-27-generic with intel linux-graphics 2013Q2, 3.10.0-997-generic,3.10.0-997-generic with intel linux-graphics 2013Q2).

External display works perfectly on VGA port.

Is this duplicate with Bug #1182386?

The mainline kernel wont start correctly (blank screen) from 3.10 and upwards with a dual monitor setup. Single monitor boots ok but then this issue I only have with a dual setup. So cant test with new mainline kernel.

Dennis Kruyt, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

This 'wait_for_pipe_off' issue seems pretty widespread. It may well be a dupe of #1182386 , and there is a Fedora report at https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=919120 . I have been seeing it a couple of times per boot on Fedora 18 from kernel 3.8.9 all the way to kernel 3.10, on a Sony Vaio VPC-Z11.

The 3.12.0-031200rc3-generic still has this problem, but I find I only get this when booting with a triple monitor setup.

I've also seen this running stock 3.13.x from trusty.

Will try linux-image-3.15.0-5-generic_3.15.0-5.10_amd64.deb (current utopic kernel) next.
