Bug Description

I upgraded to Kubuntu 13.04, and my brightness keys will not select the correct interface. This worked fine in Kubuntu 12.10, if I put "acpi_backlight=vendor" in the grub options.

Now, when /etc/default/grub contains
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="acpi_backlight=vendor"
/sys/class/backlight/ contains dell_backlight and intel_backlight. Pressing the brightness keys does nothing to the display, but modifies the value in dell_backlight/brightness . However, if I manually modify the values in intel_backlight/brightness , the backlight changes as expected.

If I modify /etc/default/grub to contain
    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
/sys/class/backlight/ now contains acpi_video0 , acpi_video1 and intel_backlight . Now, the brightness keys do work (somewhat), and the value of acpi_video1/brightness is modified.

However, "acpi_backlight=vendor" gives me more control over the backlight. For example, I can reduce the backlight down to 0% and have the screen turn off. Without this grub option, when I reduce acpi_video1/brightness to 0 with the brightness keys, the backlight is still on. Hence, it seems that the brightness keys should really modify intel_backlight instead of acpi_video1.

As per [1], I'll file a bug against the kernel.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.10 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

As per the linked page, I understand that this might be from conflicts with the nvidia driver. Should I uninstall these as recommended, and proceed? I didn't try this immediately, since I couldn't work out how I would reinstall them after testing.
