Bug Description

On my Acer Aspire 5742G, the brightness function keys actually shows the brightness notification and changes its bar, but doesn't change the display brightness.
I tried to add the acpi_backlight=vendor line on GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT variable and update grub, but it doesn't do anything.

WORKAROUND: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor“

I have the Aspire 5742Z, same issue exactly as you described.

However, per a forum I found online relating to a different Asus product, I got the hotkeys to work by changing the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT variable to "acpi_osi=" instead of "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT"

Please note, this ONLY fixes the hotkeys, and actually breaks the brightness selection bar under system settings. But it does get the Hotkeys to work.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Tested: the bug is also in the upstream, with or without acpi_backlight=vendor.

Similar problem here, Acer V5-571P

Kubuntu 13.04.

I can change the brightness with the powerdevil, but not with the Fn + left/rigth arrows

I tried the kernel from above, and the acpi_backlight=vendor line

I had the same problem with my Aspire V5-171 (Ubuntu 13.04). I tried adding "acpi_backlight=vendor" as it solved this problem in Ubuntu 12.10, but for no avail.

Then I tried this other fix: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash pcie_aspm=force acpi_backlight=vendor" and after updating grub and rebooting the brightness control and Fn keys work like a charm, even better than in 12.04, considering now I can decrease the brightness to a lower level.

For my Acer,

"pcie_aspm=force"
didn't work

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=”quiet splash acpi_osi=Linux acpi_backlight=vendor“
worked!

I have a laptop of the same model. With "acpi_osi=Linux" the brightness Fn keys work but the graphical system sliders/notifications don't (which is not a very big problem for me).

Another way of changing the brightness, for those laptops that use integrated Intel graphics like this one, is using the "intel_backlight" command in the terminal.
For example, "sudo intel_backlight 10" should change the brightness to around 10% (yes, sudo is required).
You can use this command to set the brightness even lower than what the brightness Fn keys allow.
I think this command is in the "intel-gpu-tools" package (it may already be installed) and should work even from a live CD.

Alessandro Facciorusso, could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested. If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested. For example:
kernel-fixed-upstream-v3.11-rc3

This can be done by clicking on the yellow circle with a black pencil icon next to the word Tags located at the bottom of the bug description. As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

As well, please remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug's Status as Confirmed. Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.
