Bug Description

I'm having issue with dell inspiron 5521 overheating when using ubuntu.

With a fresh new installation of ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04, both with last kernel (3.8.0-19 on 13.04), the FAN works on max speed and is really noisy.

I'm using the last version of the BIOS provided by DELL and don't meet this issue on the pre-installed windows 8.

This bug is a following to the discussion on https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu-certification/+question/226189
The bug is also notified by others users on Dell forum http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/p/19487086/20340451.aspx

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1172294/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The solution to this problem is usually to use i8kutils. I think you would try this solution and post here the results. After that, if the problem remains, a bug report would ask for fixing i8k to support Dell Inspiron 5521.

i8kutils solved this same problem in my Dell Inspiron 15R SE-4670.

i8kutils doesn't support Inspire 5521 as far as i can tell. (It seems that I have less trouble with the fan noise lately though maybe a recent update.)

I don't know if you already have done that, but it is very clarifying if you post here the result of the command 'cat /proc/i8k'. Before that the module 'i8k' must be loaded into kernel with the command 'sudo modprobe i8k'.

hm my bad, shame on me i thought the module would have load by itself only if supported.. thanks for the tips.

As there are no other user of inspiron 5521 complaining about this issue so far, i think we can probably consider it invalid/solved.
