Bug Description

I'm using a Dell XPS 13 Developer Edition with Raring.

When using an external monitor I've changed the power settings to do nothing when I close the lid of my machine. This works fine. However, the following lines get sent rapidly (>150 messages per second) via rsyslogd to kern.log:

[24957.460485] psmouse serio1: Trackpad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1
[24957.462317] psmouse serio1: Trackpad at isa0060/serio1/input0 - driver resynced.

This sends the load of the machine up to ~1.3 and causes Unity to get choppy.

Opening the lid of the machine stops the logging.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I am affected by this as well. I tried http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.9-rc8-raring/, and it still happened there.

My machine is a Dell XPS 12; a bit different but still has a Cypress touchpad. For now I am working around this by blacklisting the 'psmouse' module. I tend to use a wireless mouse over trackpad anyway, so this is annoying but not insurmountable.

I can confirm the issue exactly as described by OP on 3.9.0-030900rc8-generic. Also Dell XPS 13.

I think this is the same problem as https://bugs.launchpad.net/dell-sputnik/+bug/1048258
The problem, as described in detail there, is that, even if the trackpad is disabled, palm detection
causes these messages to spew out. It can be triggered with the lid open by placing a palm
on the trackpad.
A fix has been released, but it does not seem to have made it into the Raring kernel.

I'm using latest ubuntu kernel (3.8.0-31) and has the same problem since several days ago (after some update). Guys, if that issue was already resolved or you know some workaround - please, share it.
