Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1169884/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

As I have already mentioned It did not happened again after reboot - means that errors appeared just within one booting up process, for a lot of software.
I did not find this error from that time for any following booting up process, yet.
I am using the same version of the kernel 3.8.0-18-generic 64bit.
I cannot boot up to any other official Ubuntu kernel version/s because I do not have them installed.

(( I have installed my own compiled kernels and mainline kernel 3.9.0-999 daily build installed each week automatically but that is out of this context. ))

I'm facing the same problem. This started after I upgraded from 12.10 to 13.04 using the sorftware-udpater/update-manager.

This bug is repeatable everytime I boot using the 3.8.0-19-generic kernel. And yes, this bug goes away on booting with the previous kernel - 3.5.0-27-generic on my machine.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

To #27 -

Upgrading to linux kernel 3.9 as mentioned in comment#27 worked fine for me and I'm not facing this "... kernel NULL pointer dereference...." issue anymore. Thus, as mentioned in comment#27, I'm adding the 'kernel-fixed-upstream' tag to this ticket.

Note: I got an error/warning message similar to the one described here [0] when I first installed the linux 3.9 kernel. The linux 3.9 kernel was installed despite this. On rebooting with the 3.9 kernel, wifi didn't work. I switched my wifi drivers [1] from Broadcom bcmwl drivers to the b34 open source drivers since my wifi card was supported by both these drivers. I re-installed the 3.9 linux kernel after installing the b34 wireless drivers and everything worked smoothly.

Note: In relation to comment #28, I'm using a Dell Inspiron 1545 too with Ubuntu 13.04 32 bit and Core 2 Duo.
