Linux kernel 3.2.0-40-generic update causes regression, does not boot anymore

Bug Description

The latest kernel update caused a regression on my Samsung R60plus notebook.

The system refuses to boot like it did before, the screen just stays black after the bios messages.

Workaround: When I press Ctrl+Alt+Del the system does reboot and the Grub menu is shown, I can then just press Enter (booting the latest kernel 3.2.0-40-generic) and the system boots fine. It is just a problem with the instant booting without entering the grub menu before.

The problem also disappears when I manually set GRUB_DEFAULT=2 in /etc/default/grub, setting the standard kernel back to 3.2.0-39-generic.

Please let me know if you need more information

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream stable kernel? Please test the latest v3.2 stable kernel[0] and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

There are 3.2.0 bisection kernels we're using in an attempt to locate this problem, located here:

The most recent one is in the top directory, and all older ones are in the old/ directory.

Please test them in order, and report in this bug for each one whether you still have the problem or not. Include the kernel version in the report.

Thanks, this testing is valuable.

Fabian, thanks, let me prepare another kernel for you.

Some people report that this problem does not happen on every boot, so if possible, please test each kernel multiple times and power the system down completely between boots.

I'll update this bug when I have new test kernels.

I've moved the bisection kernels for this bug to their own directory, since the bisection results are diverging from another bug.

The new location for test kernels for this bug is here:

The latest kernel to be tested is ~lp1168961spcbisect02a, and is available at that URL

Thank you for your continued help with this.

3.2.0-40-generic_3.2.0-40.63~lp1168961spcbisect02a is also BAD.

I tested the other kernels again and the problem is perfectly reproduciblewith the BAD versions on my machine.

The same regression vmlinuz-3.2.0-40-generic is noticed on ACER 4830TG. The boot hangs. Nothing explicit is in the logs. Reversion to vmlinuz-3.2.0-39-generic works fine.

A patch has been identified which is known to cause problems in both precise and quantal kernels. Since people running both series are piling onto this bug, I'm posting the links for each.

Please test the appropriate kernel for you installation, and report whether you still have the problem. This is important, as there are some indications that we may be chasing multiple problems with these bugs.

Please report both success and failure, and include youe kernel version when you make your report.
