Bug Description

Belkin Wireless Card, 802.11b model F5D6020 (which was recognized no problem and worked great in Edgy) no longer shows up in the Network control panel. Wired networking works fine. I also tried a Proxim card this morning that a friend had and it also doesn't show up.

I wonder if this is really a bug that the Belkin card no longer works as "out of a box" upon installation of Ubuntu. However, I have been able to get the card to work in Feisty under ndiswrapper using Bel6020.inf obtained from the original installation cd. Also will need rtl8180.sys from www.realtek.com.tw. Specifically, the sys file needs to be extracted from ndis5x-8180(173).zip. The Bel6020.inf file needs to be gedited so that Bel6020.sys refences are changed to rtl8180.sys. Those 2 files with the alterations are all that are needed under ndiswrapper. Just not as easy as it used to be under Dapper and Edgy. Oh well!

I have attached the 2 files that constitute the "XP driver" for the
Belkin wireless FSD6020 v. 3000 to be run under ndiswrapper. Your
original cd contains Bel6020.sys and Bel6020.inf. I edited the *.inf
file to point to a Realtek sytem file (rtl8180.sys) instead of
Bel6020.sys (I do not know why Bel6020.sys does not work, but trust me
that it does not!). The Belkin v. 3 is really a Realtek.
Make sure that you indeed have a v. 3 wireless card, since v. 2 uses
different drivers.

Move these two files using sudo mv Bel6020.inf (or rtl8180.sys)
/usr/sbin where the ndiswrapper resides. Then run ndiswrapper.

I am looking for a good tutorial right now on how to run ndiswrapper
properly before I will be able to provide a step-by-step. You indicated
(dstubb) that you had already run ndiswrapper and it did not work. You
might want to "remove" ndiswrapper completely including configuration
files and reinstall using the latest version of ndiswrapper, which is
what I am using.

:I would guess that the easiest way to get ndiswrapper to work with the
Windows drivers for the Belkin F5D 6020 ver. 3000 (once you have the
drivers) is to use Applications>Add/Remove applications> then search for
"Windows Wireless Drivers"> load that application by first checking box.

Install the 2 driver files into /usr/sbin
~$ sudo mv Bel6020.inf /usr/sbin
~$ sudo mv rtl8180.sys /usr/sbin

Run the application "Windows Wireless Drivers" which should be under
System>Administration and follow the instructions

The way I did it after moving the 2 files to /usr/sbin is:
Use apt-get to build files from source
~$ sudo apt-get update
~$ sudo apt-get install build-essential
~$ sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
~$ sudo ln -s /usr/src/linux-headers-`uname -r` /lib/modules/`uname
-r`/build

Download latest version of ndiswrapper (1.45rc3) and extract
~$ tar zxvf ndiswrapper-1.45rc3.tar.gz

An ndiswrapper directory will be created; go into that directory
~$ cd ndiswrapper-1.45rc3
~$ sudo make uninstall
~$ make
~$ sudo make install
~$ cd /usr/sbin
At this point ndiswrapper has been installed and you are in /usr/sbin

~$ sudo ndiswrapper -i Bel6020.inf
~$ ndiswrapper -l
(Do ndiswrapper -l and check to make sure that there is the driver present)

Then run the following command to update the dependencies
~$ sudo depmod -a

~$ sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
(Your card should light up. You can run ndiswrapper -l again to make
sure driver present, hardware present)

Finally if things look good
~$ sudo ndiswrapper -m
This writes out a line in a system configuration file--usually
/etc/modprobe.conf--to tell the system that your wireless card uses the
ndiswrapper driver.

I just updated my girlfriends laptop to the latest xubuntu distribution through the software update program.

The laptop has a Belkin F5D 6020 pcmcia card which uses the Realtek r818x module (found in the rtl818x kernel modules directory).

The update installed the 2.6.20-16-generic kernel. The needed r818x and ieee81211_rtl drivers will load (using command "modprobe r818x")--noted by the fact that ifconfig and iwconfig will find and display the correct network/interface information, but the power light on the card does not come on. The card does show up when using the "lspci" and "cardctl ident" commands.

I have found this problem also exists in the 2.6.17-11-generic kernel package (from an earlier update), but the drivers will work in the 2.6.17-10-generic kernel package--which is my solution to the problem.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

Bug seemingly fixed. Kernel is quite stable, making the Intrepid Alpha 5 so far one I think I will like.
