Bug Description

While working a moment on LibreOffice Calc found that facts:
- Print job was pending (printer not printing). Found that the printer was not working. Usually if the problem persists, plug out the USB cable and then plug in again. I don't find any solution other than replugging printer USB cable to wake up the printer.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Hi..

My system is precise (12.04). But the link you provide is "raring" kernel?
Is it ok? No risk?

I have no experience to do this. No need to install linux-headers?

Hi..

I try following instructions to use kernel 3.9 rc4 by installing both linux-image and linux-image-extra for i386. Hope I don't make a mistake..

Printer seems to wake up properly after not using for approximately 5 minutes.

But still have problem on HDD expansion to wake up. LibreOffice freezes a moment after I click "save" on the file I was working with (located on HDD expansion).

Chris, could you let me know how you think the USB printer/HDD is in sleep?
Also could you post the 'dmesg' when either one is entering 'sleep'?

I think the USB printer/HDD is in sleep because it doesn't react as expected as I mentioned in bug description.

I've attached CurrentDmesg.txt (output from xdiagnose) while filing this bug. That output provided when this bug occured.
Maybe you need more information ?

Thanks,
chris

OK, I got it, maybe you should describe it as not working instead of sleep,
which has specific meaning in linux kernel. And both your USB printer/HDD
aren't in linux sleep state, as far as your problem is concerned.

For your USB printer, we can see below message, which simply means
that the two printers experienced one disconnect/connect event, so some
userspace application may not work any more since they need to reopen
the device handler.

If there are printer daemon or services, I guess that restarting these daemon or
services may workaround the problem.

Yes, if you can build kernel, it is helpful to enable CONFIG_USB_DEBUG and
post out the 'dmesg' info. But if you can't, I am wondering if we can
find why the
printer disconnects suddenly.

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I had corrected the bug description.

I'm not a techie and have very little knowledge about linux. Can you help me explain step by step instructions how to do that?

As I know I don't use any daemon or service related to printer. I only installed cairo-dock and disable unity..just wondering if that could cause some issue?

OK, could you test the kernel images on the below link and post
out the 'dmesg' log?

    http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~ming/bugs/1159358/v1/

which only enables CONFIG_USB_DEBUG so that you
can capture some usb logs when the problem happens.

Hi..

I still don't understand how to manually:
- get dmesg log
- capture usb logs

Do it from terminal? By what command?

When your problem happens, please run below command from terminal:

         dmesg > dmesg.log

then post the file of 'dmesg.log' on launchpad.

When I try to install linux-image-3.2.0-41-generic_3.2.0-41.65_amd64.deb, has error message: "Wrong architecture 'amd64'" on Ubuntu Software Center.

Maybe because my sytem is 32bit?

Seems that problem not really solved. Sometimes I have to unplug & replug usb cable to make the printer active.
Escpecially for the first time I plug that printer cable after system startup.

Chris, from the log, we can find the lines below:

             'usblp 2-1:1.1: disconnect by usbfs'
             ......
             'usblp 2-1:1.2: disconnect by usbfs'

which means some user space application released the usblp kernel
driver.

I added one line debug info in the usbfs driver to find which application
is doing it, could you test the kernel with debug info on the below link
and feedback the 'dmesg' log?

Thanks,

See below trace, it is the application of 'usb' which releases the usblp kernel
driver. I don't find 'usb' in current precise release, and looks it
doesn't belong
to udev too, so is it your test code? or could you find the package

I attached screenshot from Synaptic which shown usb related package. Maybe it could help you analize.

I mean the user space application of 'usb' killed the current kernel usb printer
driver, and may cause your problem, so I need you to find the killer
application.

Maybe the 'usb' application is included in the package of
'printer-driver-hpcups'
or 'printer-driver-hpijs', and your printer is canon, and shouldn't need them.

So could you remove these two packages to see if your problem can be fixed?

Thanks

I have removed:
- printer-driver-hpijs
- printer-driver-hpcups (also removing dependencies: hplip & printer-driver-postscript-hp)

But the problem still exists, I attached dmesg.log after removing above packages & when that problem happens.

So usb isn't included into the two packages, could you run below commands
in terminal to see where is 'usb' from?

            which usb
            ps auxf | grep usb

So suggest you to check if there is 'usb' utility in udev or other system component in your system,

You should understand that there is one process named as 'usb' which
disconnects your printer, shouldn't you?

But I am sure how to find it in distribution, and looks no such utility in

I'm sorry for my very limited knowledge, I just know that something, you said 'usb', disconnects the printer.

Perhaps you could tell me what command should I execute in terminal or what should I search in Synaptics?
So I could provide you with such informations.

Yes, so you need to find where is 'usb'.

There should be one file named with 'usb' which is executable in your
filesystem,
any file search utility(find, grep, ls, ...) can be used to do this searching.

No, it is wrong, and the command or 'usb' executable file is inside filesystem,
nothing to do with 'dmesg' output.

I found way to reproduce with these simple steps:
1. Start Ubuntu
2. Plug printer cable (already on) -> printer still OFF (status: paused)
3. Unplug & replug -> printer ON (status: ready)

Always reproducible with those steps above, second plugging (after system start) will make printer ON.

Maybe this information is useful, that HDD drive is NTFS filesystem.

Since issues that I experienced looks rarely happen, perhaps it's because I installed this Ubuntu Precise through Wubi?

It's ok I'll do that when I have time..perhaps several days later.

I also have to say sorry to revise comment #44. The behavior looks like inconsistent, sometimes printer is on while plugging for the 1st time after system booting.

I found another fact: while printer is off, fax (same device) is on, & vice versa. And I can swith on/off printer or fax via system-config-printer.
Looks like printer driver problem..

I've learned creating bootable flashdisk & I've just tried 13.10 daily.

Can't say that this bug is fixed since 13.10 generates different behavior. Printer & fax status are always idle even cable unplugged. If cable plugged then it will do printing. But if cable unplugged then no job is sending & printer queue is empty.

Perhaps I made mistake while trying, but I think I can't do testing any further with 13.10.. Too many problems...drives me crazy..

My stupid suspicion currently is printer driver conflicts with fax driver (using same driver). Or, perhaps, because both using same interface/port?
