Mouse goes in... numlock gets stuck

When I use a mouse with the laptop (Feisty on Macbook Pro)... the numlock activates and cannot turn it off (making the keyboard unusable)

I confirm this problem on my 2GHz white MacBook with Ubuntu Feisty.
Sometimes Ubuntu boots with this problem, sometimes it happens out of the blue while working. Plugging in a usb-mouse, or removing it, sometimes creates or solves the problem.
OS X doesn't have this problem.

This problem not only occurs when plugging in/out usb-mouses. It also happens when booting.

What works for me if the system is booted with numlock on:
1. choose System->Quit, then Suspend.
2. THEN close the laptop lid.
3. Open it after 5 seconds.
4. Numlock is on but goes off after 1 seconds. I can enter my password to unlock Gnome and then I can actually use it :-)

I confirm this problem on a Macbook Pro 3,1 running Intrepid/x86_64.

Also have this problem on a Desktop running Intrepid i386.

It seems that eventually the "System/Preferences/Keyboard/Mouse Keys/Pointer can be controlled using keypad" turns itself on and causes the problem.

Numberpad is inactivated and text editors behave strangely. (Abiword, OpenOffice and Symphony, at least)

After leaving GDM and logging in again everything works fine but the problem returns if this option is "magically" turned to "on".

This bug existed in a previous Ubuntu version, I'm not sure which, have to search again in Launchpad, but the unattended "turn on" seems something new.

Isn't possible to uninstall this option?

James Hooker, thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Fiesty reached EOL on October 19, 2008.
