Ya, kernerl prior to 3.8.0-5-generic does not exhibit this bug.
I used all these kernels 3.8.0-4-generic, 3.8.0-1--generic,3.8.0-0-generic, without any problem

It looks like v3.8-rc7 may have introduced this bug. Can you test the following two kernels:

v3.8-rc6: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc6-raring/
v3.8-rc7: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-rc7-raring/

If rc6 is good and rc7 is bad, I can perform a bisect to identify the commit that introduced this regression. One thing to note, you will need to install both the linux-image and linux-image-extras packages.

Can you test the v3.8 final kernel? If it doesn't have the bug, then an Ubuntu SAUCE patch may have introduced the regression:
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v3.8-raring/

If it does have the bug, I can bisect between v3.8-rc7 and v3.8 final.

I'm currently testing 3.8 final mainline, but this comment indicates that it works:

I can test any bisects as well.

Thanks for the update, Ted. Can you confirm the bug still exists in the latest Raring kernel, which is version: 3.8.0-25-generic ? If it does still exists, we can review what commit introduced this regression.

This bug doesn't exist in the latest kernel. I hit the bug on upgrade to Raring due to an out-of-date mirror. Marking this as fix released.

HI Ted,

Per IRC, I re-opened this bug. Can you test the latest Raring kernel, just to confirm the bug still exists? The kernel can be downloaded from:

I can successfully boot with this kernel version:

Linux version 3.8.0-32-generic (buildd@lamiak) (gcc version 4.7.3 (Ubuntu/Linaro 4.7.3-1ubuntu1) ) #47-Ubuntu SMP Tue Oct 1 22:35:23 UTC 2013

Is that the right version?

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote :

Yes, that is the correct version. That is good news, that indicates the latest kernel in -proposed fixes this bug.

If possible, can you enable the -proposed repository on your system and see if this resolves the bug? See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed.

Thank you in advance!

With this version, I can seemingly only boot successfully if I force the GRUB menu to appear by failing a boot once, then entering GRUB's 'edit' screen, and pressing F10 from there to boot.

I'm not sure why this could happen, but it seems to be somewhat consistent. Since installing the version from -proposed, I haven't had a successful one-off boot. I admittedly didn't test the version I downloaded directly from launchpad as many times.

My /proc/version and apt policy for linux-image follow:
