Bug Description

Using 3.2.0 -37 kernel (12.04 LTS 64 bit)

Hardware is: Dell Poweredge T110 II

The maintainer of the io_edgeport usb module has indicated to me that there must be something in the Ubuntu kernel distribution that is preventing io_edgeport from automatically loading when a Digi Edgeport device is plugged into a usb port.

dmesg (after dmesg -c) is as follows after plugging in the Digi device:

[ 192.866565] usb 2-1.6: new full-speed USB device number 6 using ehci_hcd
[ 192.959323] hub 2-1.6:1.0: USB hub found
[ 192.959477] hub 2-1.6:1.0: 1 port detected
[ 193.229880] usb 2-1.6.1: new full-speed USB device number 7 using ehci_hcd

(io_edgeport is not automatically loaded and no serial devices are created in /dev as they should be according to the maintainer)

if I manually load the module, dmesg looks as follows:

[ 3131.433041] USB Serial support registered for Edgeport 2 port adapter
[ 3131.433050] USB Serial support registered for Edgeport 4 port adapter
[ 3131.433058] USB Serial support registered for Edgeport 8 port adapter
[ 3131.433066] USB Serial support registered for EPiC device
[ 3131.433082] usbcore: registered new interface driver io_edgeport
[ 3131.433083] io_edgeport: v2.7:Edgeport USB Serial Driver

(no serial devices are created in /dev as they should be according to the maintainer and Digi is still not recognized and functional when attached to a usb port)

According to the maintainer this module is known to work properly in other 3.x distributions. I've been using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit.

output from lsusb is as follows (Digi device is "Inside Out Networks"):

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 002: ID 8087:0024 Intel Corp. Integrated Rate Matching Hub
Bus 002 Device 003: ID 03f0:0024 Hewlett-Packard KU-0316 Keyboard
Bus 002 Device 004: ID 413c:3012 Dell Computer Corp. Optical Wheel Mouse
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0c2e:0200 Metro Metrologic Scanner
Bus 002 Device 023: ID 1608:0288 Inside Out Networks [hex]
Bus 002 Device 024: ID 1608:0202 Inside Out Networks [hex]

To quote the maintainer: "Wow, that's really bad. Something is keeping the io_edgeport driver
from being loaded. It should be automatically found and bound to this
device when you plug it in."

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Further research into this problem indicates that the problem may have to do with new device ID from Digi. Will follow up when confirmed.

In further testing and discussion with the io_edgeport maintainer, I was able to confirm that this is a new Digi device with a new jUSB ID number (io_edgport supports the Digi Edgeport/4i) not supported yet. I suspect the only difference between the devices is RJ45 vs DB9 serial connectors.

Would you still like me do do further testing?

Thanks.
