Bug Description

I'm having this problem for a long time. The cooling solution (single fan for CPU and GPU) on my LG 590 (5700) laptop, suddenly stops to work and don't start again causing overheat and consequential system shutdown to prevent damage.

How can I solve this?

[I'm using Ubuntu 12.10 but the laptop was originally designed to run Windows.]

- The fan works normal on Windows. It doesn't stop cooling even under heavy load such as games or full hd videos. As the processing temperature increases, the rotation rises too. In Ubuntu it happens in reverse; when under heavy load it just stops spinning;

- I always use the latest stable driver version of graphics card and BIOS;

- lmsensors are installed and working. No luck with fancontrol though. When I try to configure it, I get: "There are no pwm-capable sensor modules installed".

P.S.: I'm new to this so I'm sorry if I did everything wrong here. Instruct me how to do a correct one.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1125052/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.8 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

I have had this problem for a long while both on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and Ubuntu 11.04. Notebook fans would occasionally stop working despite high workload and only continue working after the CPU heated up to >95°C. No issues of that nature under Windows.

I recently installed the latest kernel (3.8.2-030802-generic) on my system and haven't had any instances of the fans stopping since. However, as I've only been running this kernel for two weeks I cannot provide any conclusive evidence as to whether the bug is gone or not. Back in the day it would sometimes take a few weeks for the issue to reappear.

Sadly I have to report that I just experienced this issue while running Linux 3.8.2. Seems as though the kernel upgrade is not the solution I was hoping for after all.

This issue appears to be an upstream bug, since you tested the latest upstream kernel. Would it be possible for you to open an upstream bug report[0]? That will allow the upstream Developers to examine the issue, and may provide a quicker resolution to the bug.

Please follow the instructions on the wiki page[0]. The first step is to email the appropriate mailing list. If no response is received, then a bug may be opened on bugzilla.kernel.org.

It's been a long time but I think it's fixed. Thanks a lot if someone actually reported this on Bugzilla and they corrected.

Notes:
- Using 64-bit now [I don't think it was because of 32-bit though];
- Separated partitions (root, home and swap) [I don't think it was because of this too];
- Didn't test with games but it's enough (and a relief) for me to watch videos in HD on whatever browser and see my fan working properly.

My fan works ok at boot, but after a day of usage (and maybe some suspends) the fan "goes dead" .

This is happening on 3.19.0-33-generic under Ubuntu 14.04. But on the same hardware, it does not happen on 3.5.0-54-generic under Ubuntu 12.04. Hardware: Asus X453M.
