Bug Description

This is needed to export aufs filesystems via nfs.

This was set in a previous version (in Debian - http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=490079), and released in Ubuntu build for aufs 0+20080719-4 (https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/aufs/0+20080719-4), so this could perhaps be considered a regression (although to be fair aufs and its packaging has undergone significant rewriting since then).

Regardless considering aufs is a popular method of supporting large storage systems (among other things) and nfs is a popular method of exporting large storage systems, it would be great if this could be enabled in a future build, unless there is some known contraindication.

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Missing required logs.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1121699

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

apport does not find anything of relevance. I am using Ubuntu Server 12.10 amd64, with standard kernel, aufs and nfs packages. I have confirmed that CONFIG_AUFS_EXPORT appears to be disabled both in the distributed kernel and in the Ubuntu Kernel git HEAD. This flag is documented as a requirement for NFS exports in http://aufs.sourceforge.net/aufs3/man.html.

I have also recompiled the Ubuntu kernel with this flag enabled and can confirm that NFS exports are now working. Trivial patch (for amd64, I am happy to reroll for other platforms if desired) is attached.

This cirtainly has not been enabled in any Ubuntu release Lucid or later, and didn't exist in Hardy. That said it doesn't sound a particularly disasterous option to enable. I will investigate.

I did some research - CONFIG_AUFS_EXPORT=y in the following kernels for Ubuntu 12.04.5:
   linux-image-generic-lts-trusty (linux-image-3.13.0-36-generic),
   linux-image-generic-lts-saucy (linux-image-3.11.0-26-generic),
   linux-image-generic-lts-raring (linux-image-3.8.0-44-generic),

and not set in:
   linux-image-generic-lts-quantal (linux-image-3.5.0-54-generic),
   linux-image-generic (linux-image-3.2.0-69-generic).

So the fix is needed for 3.2 and 3.5 kernels in Ubuntu 12.04. Please release it.

Seems the flag is disabled again in linux-4.2.0-16-generic.

I've upgraded from Ubuntu 15.04 to Ubuntu 15.10 and my exporting of AuFS is broken now.
