Bug Description

It would be excellent to have CONFIG_NFS_V4_1=y in a future Precise kernel so we can mount our new distributed NFS 4.1 storage on LTS without having to reach for custom kernels or raring backports for production servers.

Debian ships with it these days (#627655), as does RHEL6 and Raring.

Hi Mattias,

I've uploaded Precise and Quantal test kernels, compiled with the CONFIG_NFS_V4_1 (the Quantal kernel also required the CONFIG_NFS_V4_1_IMPLEMENTATION_ID_DOMAIN set). Here's the URL:

http://people.canonical.com/~henrix/lp1111416/

There are kernels both for amd64 and i386. Could you please test these kernels, specially regarding functionality (they contain the options you were looking for) and stability? Thanks.

For starters, no regressions noticed on machines not using the new features:
amd64 laptop doing laptoppy things, also reading/writing nfs3.
amd64 server, doing mostly local IO.

Pending results from NFS 4.1 tests this is looking promising.

Running test kernel on a laptop with Quantal. Reading and writing over NFS4.1 seems to work as intended. No problems detected so far.

Luis Henriques (henrix) wrote :

Could someone provide some update on this? Has the kernels (both Precise and Quantal) have been successfully tested with this feature enabled and without regressions? Thanks.

Mattias Wadenstein (maswan) wrote :

They have both been tested without regressions, but the 4.1 functionality has only been tested on Quantal yet. More testing is ongoing, but travel and meetings cut into testing time, unfortunately.

We have now tested the NFS 4.1 functionality of both the Precise and Quantal kernels and they both work as expected. No regressions have been found when testing on machines not using NFS 4.1.

This bug is awaiting verification that the kernel in -proposed solves the problem. Please test the kernel and update this bug with the results. If the problem is solved, change the tag 'verification-needed' to 'verification-done'.

If verification is not done by one week from today, this fix will be dropped from the source code, and this bug will be closed.

See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation how to enable and use -proposed. Thank you!
