ALSO: built-in speakers worked fine in Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows, so the hardware is operating correctly.

@Brad Figg - Thanks. Hope this output is what you wanted. Seems a bit verbose in the comments section, but oh well.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.7 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. Please only remove that one tag and leave the other tags. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Thanks Joseph! The upstream kernel does in fact appear to fix my audio problem. Built-in speakers work, headphones continue to work correctly. I have edited the tags for this bug ticket as you requested.

I was able to fix this on my fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 on my ThinkPad T530 by running "alsamixer", making sure all of the levels were up, and disabling "auto-mute". Now the speakers work fine.

I should also mention that installing the upstream kernel as recommended above did indeed fix the problem, but: 1) I did *not* get an additional boot option at start, but rather it seems to have clobbered my original one, and 2) whatever window I interacted with--LibreOffice, wireless applet, Chrome, panel--would instantly grab 100% of my CPU such that I couldn't do anything but magic SysRq and reboot. Fix was to revert to current kernel.

Sorry, for my post above (#23), I should mention I did a Wubi install.

FYI: The upstream kernels were causing my machine to not boot properly so I removed them.

I rebooted on the regular 12.10 kernel. I went back to alsamixer and disabled "Auto-mute" to get my speakers working. Surprisingly, after making this change audio works correctly again, even auto-muting the speakers when headphones are plugged in.
