Bug Description

USB storage mounting suddenly stopped working with 0781:5530 SanDisk Corp. Cruzer. The only workaround I have discovered so far is to run Startup Disk Creator. This causes the usb disk to be detected and then Nautilus automatically mounts it.

Leon Marcus, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

Could you please test the latest upstream kernel available following https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds ? It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Please do not test the kernel in the daily folder, but the one all the way at the bottom. Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please comment on which kernel version specifically you tested and remove the tag:
needs-upstream-testing

This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the text:
needs-upstream-testing

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tags:
kernel-fixed-upstream
kernel-fixed-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the following tags:
kernel-bug-exists-upstream
kernel-bug-exists-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, please comment as to why specifically you were unable to test it and add the following tags:
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream
kernel-unable-to-test-upstream-VERSION-NUMBER

where VERSION-NUMBER is the version number of the kernel you tested.

Please let us know your results. Thank you for your understanding.

Tested mainline kernel 3.6.0-030600rc5generic. Bug still exists in upstream kernel. Previously mentioned workaround of opening Startup Disk Creator still works in upstream kernel as well.

Leon Marcus, thank you for testing the mainline kernel.

Could you please plug the USB device in, unplug all other USB devices, perform the WORKAROUND, type the following at the terminal, and post the results to this report:

Leon Marcus, thank you for posting the lsusb output.

Does this issue occur with just the device:
Bus 002 Device 005: ID 0781:5530 SanDisk Corp. Cruzer

or across different USB storage devices?

I'm traveling right now and only have my one usb drive with me. If I can borrow another one I will try to confirm and get back to you, otherwise won't be able to respond until I get home in another week or so.

For what it's worth, this same usb storage device previously worked with no problems. Once this bug started happening I used Gparted to reformat the usb device in case it was at fault, but this did not solve the problem.

Hi

I confirm the bug on a Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS (GNU/Linux 3.2.0-40-generic x86_64)

pluging in the usb stick shows the following in dmesg:
scsi 10:0:0:0: Direct-Access SanDisk Cruzer 8.02 PQ: 0 ANSI: 0 CCS
[ 225.315061] sd 10:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0

[ 227.220233] sd 10:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
[ 227.221840] sdb: sdb1

but nether cinnamon (1.6.7) nor unity or gnome show any mounted device.
Running the "Startup Disk Creator", closing it again and suddenly the stick gets mounted.

unfortunately the computer is in heavy use so i cant test fixes at the moment.
Christopher M. Penalver, I will try to test your kernel package sometimes at the weekend. does it work in 12.04? I ask because of the raring in the url.

with regards
christian
