Bug Description

Problem looks like:
#133251 / #132960

When rt2500 /rt2x00 is active in kernel on todays update the laptop will crash on startup (after login before desktop appears).. on every update of linux-ubuntu-modules i have to remove the files related to rt2x00 otherwise the system is useless.

So please fix the bug or remove the drivers !

With daily-live from 25 sept 2007 I see a total hang-up when trying to set up a connection with a wpapsk-configured AP.

Card chipset is rt2500 in a PCMCIA incarnation by Conceptronic. Im suscribed to #133251, wich appears to be related to this.

I too have freeze troubles in Gutsy due to rt2500 module (PCI card, WEP enc). If network is unconfigured i can boot perfectly. once i try to setup network trough network manager or manually, i get a freeze!
i have also feisty running is this box, and i have no trouble concerning network...

Dont know if someone is looking for a work around for this problem but the ndiswrapper with windows drivers is working great in 32 and 64 bit Ubuntu
So just remove the rt2x00 and rt2500 and use them.

osteenbergen, which ver. of ndiswrapper you are using?

Edimax EW-7108PCg PCMCI card. To me the fresh installed Gutsy Beta worked well. But after the 1st successful update using the same card. It started freezing randomly. It also freezes randomly using ndiswrapper 1.48 (more stable than rt61)

Just did an apt-get install of ndiswrapper

sudo apt-get install ndisgtk ndiswrapper-common ndiswrapper-utils-1.9

Then added ndiswrapper to /etc/modules, because else ndiswrapper doenst get loaded during startup and then you have to sudo iwlist wlan0 scan every login.

ndiswrapper -v
utils version: 1.9
driver filename: /lib/modules/2.6.22-12-generic/ubuntu/misc/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper.ko
version: 1.45
vermagic: 2.6.22-12-generic SMP mod_unload 586

Attachment are the windows config files for 32 and 64 bit
Just start up the ndisgtk and select the correct ini for your system.

Mathew your card should work with this windows driver.
(list of cards supported is in the end of the rt2500.inf file)

I tried to use wicd but it also doesn't work:
- booted with unconfigured wlan0 (deleted /etc/network/interfaces wlan0 part)
- configured wlan0 with wicd

each step is ok when i try to connect; except the dhcp request: it freezes when wicd tries to obtain Ip address from my internet box...

Thx for the ndiswrapper tip, but i'm more interested in trying to resolve that bug than avoiding it :p

I've removed the Windows driver from this bug report due to the fact that as far as I know they are not redistributable. Please don't add them to the bug report again. Thanks!

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
