As per lspci the PCI based SD card reader in Toshiba laptops is unsupported:

This appears to be a well known issue but couldn't find it logged anywhere. There is another revisions affected:

After review we feel this bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and are marking this as "Won't Fix". I assume this is still an issue but in case you wanted to test. . . .Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. After an extensive search, I have come to the conclusion that there is no available driver for the proprietary Toshiba America Info Systems SD TypA Controller at the moment. We shall keep this open for further kernel versions.

As Colin mentioned, there is no driver available for this hardware at the moment so this will not get resolved for Hardy. However, please do note that we have milestoned this for a later release to try and get this resolved in the future. Thanks.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The card-reader still doesn't work with the life-CD Alpha5. When I list "slhw", the hardware is still "unclamed"...

BTW: When I try to install alfa5 on my Toshiba laptop, the partition manager hangs before I can chose between the different ways to partition the hard drive.

So I'm sorry, in my case, no progress is made.

I've followed the link to the above mentioned source. It would require some work to
build with current kernels (2.6.28) but we don't have any laptops with this device available. If someone in the community who has access to a Toshiba laptop with this
device, it would be possible to get the module into shape to build out-of-tree with
current kernels so that they could test/debug the driver. There seems to be little interest in other forums for this, now older, device. If no one can step forward with the resources, we will have to close this bug.

I got a Toshiba laptop which would benefit from this driver, and I would love to help. I am a programmer, but have no experience with linux modules/drivers. I would love to help and gain knowledge about it while doing so.

Originally I wanted to try it on my laptop and continue the driver myself, but the lack of knowledge was a big wall.

I've got this device (see higher). I can do the testing and give you feedback.

Note that if for now, the Intrepid-Ibex (9.04) beta doesn't work on my laptop. If the x-server is running like a minute, the computer halts and my caps-lock light flashes. So I think it would be difficult to test with kernels higher than 2.6.27 unless somebody can assist me to install 2.6.28 on a hardy-heron-release (8.10).

For now, the testing would be for Jaunty which released this week. If you both can get released Jaunty to work, we can go from there. I have the above mentioned source but have not attempted to build it yet. I'll let you know when I have something ready. Since this is not in even in the kernel pipeline, I will probably not even have a deb package.
More later. Backports would probably not be an option.

I'm a programmer for over a decade, but I never dived into driver development. I did extensive low level programming (embedded devices) so I'm comfortable with undocumented devices. My laptop is effected by this, and I would love to pick this up.

Anyone has a good guide on how to start with kernel driver development? I will most likely pick this up.
