Bug Description
Binary package hint: gnome-panel
Lost access to Ethernet and no sound after installing linux-image-
Reboot using the Generic Kernel and the following message is displayed:
There was an error starting GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
The last error message was:
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
Screen is missing icons for HDDs. The network indicator (upper right corner of screen) looks more like a mouse than the normal double-screen symbol. The active symbol now looks like a running person rather than the prior symbol. Ethernet access and sound are active.

Hi wes,
Did you try uninstalling those packages afterwards and reinstalling the generic versions? Also, the Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test: http:// www.ubuntu. com/testing . We'd be curious to know if this issue still exists. Thanks.
