Bug Description

Often, when trying to transfer large files from my laptop (Gutsy) to my desktop (Dapper) using ssh over the wired network at my work, when a transfer size of c. 8 MB has been reached, the transfer stops and the connection with the outer world (Internet, ping, ssh, desktop) is gone. The laptop does not respond to pinging from the desktop. I know of no way to get the connection going again, other than the Windows-solution; a re-start. Sudo dhclient or sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart does not work.
1) What is going on? 2) How could I get my network back again without rebooting?

Can you paste the output of the command "dmesg"? Probably this will help finding the problem.

That's a large output of 1022 lines, should I paste all of it or could I narrow down things using grep?

Attach it as a file.

I can't replicate this here. I think it's not SSH specific. I think it's a kernel issue with the driver for your network card.

The Hardy Heron Alpha series is currently under development and contains an updated version of the kernel. It would be helpful if you could test the latest Hardy Alpha release: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. Thanks.

Tried Hardy Heron Alpha6 but couldn't replicate the exact problem, as I could not get access to my hard disk from the Live CD (authentication problem?). So I could not try the same thing of transferring files over ssh. Downloading a large file through firefox went fine though.

Side-comment: it would be nice to have, by default, an minal (icon on the panel) on installing a fresh Ubuntu version.

the side comment got pasted badly. It should say: it would be nice to have, by default, a terminal icon on the panel, on installing a fresh Ubuntu version.

For some reason lately the problem hasn't surfaced, so I would consider this bug solved.
Many thanks,
