After taking the steps given at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/NvidiaLaptopBinaryDriverSuspend, the hibernate results have changed to an auto shutdown, rather than a freeze. Also, the file corruption problem appears to have gone away.

Still unable to successfully suspend or hibernate.
