Bug Description

When attempting to book into a fresh install of ubuntu 7.10 (any kernel version that comes with it, even the recovery), the laptop will often shut down unexpectedly during the "Loading hardware drivers..." step. The machine simply turns off. I would say this happens 3/4 of the time. Otherwise the machine boots up normally.

I've tried adding "acpi=off" and "nolapic" and booting in various combinations and it doesn't seem to have any effect on success or failure of boots.

I've been using this laptop for more the a year with various versions of 5.10 and 6.10 with no issues.

hardware specs:
HP Omnibook 6100
512 Mb of RAM (shared with video)
1GHz Pentium 3 M
Ati Radeon mobility M6 LY
Prism 2.5 Wavelan (wireless)

The last lines shown in the boot log before failure are:
Oct 29 11:01:18 Traveller kernel: [ 43.724000] [drm] writeback test succeeded in 1 usecs
(the following line is not always present)
Oct 29 11:02:33 Traveller kernel: [ 118.700000] mtrr: no MTRR for d8000000,1000000 found

during successful boots, it appears the next line is usually:
Oct 29 10:01:45 Traveller kernel: [ 55.240000] wifi0: invalid skb->cb magic (0x00000000, expected 0xf08a36a2)

The entirety of the boot log from a failed boot is pasted below:

The Hardy Heron Alpha2 release will be coming out soon (around Dec 20). It will have an updated version of the kernel. It would be great if you could test with this new release and verify if this issue still exists. I'll be sure to update this report when Alpha2 is available. Thanks!

Hardy Heron Alpha2 was recently released. It contains an updated version of the kernel. You can download and try the new Hardy Heron Alpha2 release from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hardy/alpha-2/ . You should be able to then test the new kernel via the LiveCD. If you can, please verify if this bug still exists or not and report back your results. General information regarding the release can also be found here: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/hardy/alpha2 . Thanks!

The issue can't be reproduced by booting with the 7.10 LiveCD, though it still exists when booting off the hard drive.

The LiveCD of HH Alpha 2 boot properly (I tried it several times to make sure).

To test for this fix, I wiped the drive and attempted to install HH Alpha 2. The instillation failed with an unexpected shutdown during the automated installation process.

I then attempted to install 7.10, and this installation seemed to fail in the same way, with the computer simply turning off with no warning.

Installing 6.10 seemed to work smoothly.

I'll attempt to install 7.10 a couple more times to see if this in an intermittent bug. My hunch is that the unexpected shutdowns during install are related to the underlying problem in this case. Where can I find the install log, or how can I go about determining where in the installation process it fails?

When encountering issues when installing Ubuntu from the Live CD, the package in question is usually ubiquity. The log files of interest are outlined at the following wiki:

Hope that helps. Thanks.

Hi svenvanderstock,

Sorry for the delayed response. Can you try booting with the "splash" and "quiet" options removed. Do you notice any errors being output to your screen? If so, care to take a digital photo of your screen with the errors and attach it to this bug report. Thanks.

Rename intel-rng.ko to intel-rng.ko.bak, so the system can't found it during boot. Location of this file: /lib/modules/(used Kernel)/kernel/drivers/char/hw_random/

You have to do this every time you install or update the Kernel, because the system rewrite a new file. After update the Kernel, i do this before reboot the system (with root using sudo nautilus).

PS: Can one of you, with the HP Omnibook 6100, please take a look to this thread: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/222527 ? I eventually need a working dsdt.dsl file to compile.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
