when I connect up my webcam stv680 on usb on gutsy it works 2 minutes.
if I connect it. the continuous bug to oblige reboot for which functions 2 minutes before bug.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. What exactly happens after 2 minutes? Does the device stop working or does the system lock up? Thanks in advance.

my webcam stopped functioning after 2 minutes of use (ekiga, amsn, vlc, camorama).

ubuntu does not want any more to recognize it without having reboot the PC.

I can confirm that this webcam don't work in Gutsy. In my case, it freeze on the first access from program (camorama/ekiga) and it won't work anymore. Unloading and reloading stv680.ko don't reset it. Either disconnecting it don't make result. Only way is reboot..

After it freezes I can run the following commands and i can use for another short period

rmmod uhci-hcd
modprobe uhci-hcd

I have checked the same camera on a machine with Intel 64 processor (the first one was a Sempron) and it works perfectly. could it be something related to the chipsets on the motherboard? The usb driver?

Also tried with Ubuntu 7.10 32bit running on a Intel 64bit. Works. So it might be that only on AMD platforms it fails. Can you confirm this? I asked a friend with AMD to test these days.

I have tried again. It works.. if in usb1. I'm running the same gutsy, regularly updated, on the same machine. If the webcam is connected on a usb2 port, than it stop working few second after it's being used. If it is used in usb1 through a hub, for example, than it works well. Tried on another machine with usb1, all ok. I'll try on another computer with usb2 when I can.

Bug still present on Hardy, altought results are not the same: with cheese the webcam works well even on a usb2 port, but with camorama it freeze. After these, /dev/video0 don't work anymore..

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.
