Bug Description

On a fresh install of gutsy tribe 5, my sound card was not detected - no sound modules are loaded and there are no devices listed in the "devices" section of System->Prefs->Sound.

I am using an Asus P5K-e motherboard with an Core 2 Due E6750.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at [WWW] https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. I have classified this bug as a bug in pciutils

If you really meant to file this bug because the sound card wasn't detected, please edit the description and title of the bug to clarify this point.
If this is the case, we should change the package affected as well to linux-source-2.6.22.

The "unknown devices" output isn't really an issue when it comes to detect the hardware, this detection is made using the device ids, which is a numerical value which you can look at in the output of "lspci -n".

Please include the following additional information, if you have not already done so (pay attention to lspci's additional options), as required by the Ubuntu Kernel Team:
1. Please include the output of the command "uname -a" in your next response. It should be one, long line of text which includes the exact kernel version you're running, as well as the CPU architecture.
2. Please run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" after a fresh boot and attach the resulting file "dmesg.log" to this bug report.
3. Please run the command "sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log" and attach the resulting file "lspci-vvnn.log" to this bug report.

For your reference, the full description of procedures for kernel-related bug reports is available at [WWW] http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies. Thanks in advance!

The output of uname -a is:

Linux cdesk 2.6.22-10-386 #1 Wed Aug 22 07:43:24 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

If the "unknown device" isn't a bug / problem, I will change the description to relate to the soundcard.

With some help from Basilio, I have managed to get the sound working.

It required the following steps:

1. Install linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.22-10-386
2. restart
3. Run depmod -aAe
4. run modprobe snd-hda-intel

since the issue was solved and not directly related to a bug in any package, i'm closing this bug marking it as invalid.
If you Chris or anyone think that wasn't the way to go, please feel free to re-open this bug

I'm also having trouble with an ASUS P5K-E motherboard (Analog AD1988B sound card, http://www.analog.com/en/prod/0,2877,AD1988B,00.html). The sound card was detected and working in Feisty stable, but no longer after updating to Gutsy stable, so IMO this is still a valid bug.

On the _other_ hand, Chris, Basilio, and Ubuntu just made my week (no, make that month) - The instructions worked better than any expectations! I've tried to get 5.1 sound via S/PDIF (aka IEC958) on at least five *nixes (Mandrake, SUSE, SLC, Fedora, and FreeBSD), and on Ubuntu Gutsy it now works for the first time ever! I've literally worked weeks on this during the last few years, without success. On the latest hardware optical 5.1 sound doesn't even work properly with the manufacturer's Windows drivers.

Please please please make this kind of configuration automatic in Ubuntu soon. And thank you very much!

Flipping this back to invalid as it appears this is not a bug but rather missing necessary packages.
