I would like to confirm that just installing the latest linux-backports-modules package in Synaptic corrects the issue for me.
Ubuntu 7.10 running on HP Pavillion dv6000
Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
No further action was needed on my part. For the many others that I assume have this issue (Thinkpad x/t61, Acer notebooks, HP Pavillions), is it possible that this a package could automatically be installed if this hardware is detected?
