Bug Description

On the newest revision of the MacBook Pro, the cd drive works for the install, but in Ubuntu itself, the drive does not work. Supposedly, adding 'piix' to /etc/modules fixes it, but it did not for me. here is the result of 'uname -a'. lspci and dmesg are attached below.

 Linux blackbird.umm.maine.edu 2.6.22-8-generic #1 SMP Thu Jul 12 15:59:45 GMT 2007 i686 GNU/Linux

Confirmed in gutsy tribe 3 using i386 alternate cd default install. I don't understand this bug; the drive works for installation, and some other people apparently have the drive working the whole time. My MBP is a 15" santa rosa, 2.4 GHz and 256MB VRAM, week 29 manufacture. USA version. I did not try the piix fix.

it might work in feisty with the piix driver, gutsy does not provide a piix. there is only pata_mpiix.ko, ata_piix.ko and pata_oldpiix.ko.

i tried to load them all with no effect, as far as i can tell. (nothing appears in dmesg)

I confirm that it worked for me with the piix module.

Out-of-the-box, the DVD drive doesn't work under my Kubuntu.

I inserted a CD and couldn't read the content, it wasn't mounted, and there was no /dev/hd* or sd* other than sda (the hard disk).

Then I typed sudo modprobe piix in a terminal and the drive began to read the CD, and Kubuntu popep up the content in a new windows. The "eject" key on the keyboard works too, using the latest pommed.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug is a duplicate of bug 127163, which contains a patch, and is being marked as such. One workaround that may allow to the drive to work is a 'modprobe ide-generic'. Feel free to submit any future bugs you may find.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!
