My network controller identifies as lspci
Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4328 802.11a/b/g/n (rev 03)
Under gutsy I installed ndiswrapper and manually copied the appropriate drivers in place: worked great
Kubuntu Intrepid brought up the restricted driver manager, install worked and connect to wifi too.
But I experience the SAME problems as mentioned: When I am very close to the wifi router, speed is ok, when I am farther away it is unacceptable. The fix

iwconfig eth2 rate 5.5M auto
worked great.
