Same here on Thinkpad Z61m with proprietary fglrx (tested with version 8.37.8 package from ubuntu as well as version 8.40.4 manually installed). Gutsy is up to date (64bit, Kubuntu but also tested with Ubuntu)
As suggested by Johan "echo mem > /sys/power/state" results in permission denied for both user action and sudo action, respectively. When I perform:
sudo -s
echo mem > /sys/power/state
the command results, metaphorically speaking, in a screen or better screenshot. The screen remains visible but the machine is lock down without the possibility of input or interaction. I've to perform a hard power off.
