Kernel module 8139too in MMIO mode freezes system on Intel 945GM chipsets

When booting Breezy, Dapper, Edgy or Feisty, the LiveCD would freeze during boot as soon as the 8139too module for the RTL8139 NIC is loaded. Further investigating the problem with a custom Gentoo install, it turns out that 8139too compiled with MMIO mode enabled freezes the system, while 8139too with PIO mode enabled works flawlessly.

This problem prevents installing Ubuntu or even running the LiveCD on laptops using the Intel 945GM chipset and a RTL8139 NIC. This problem now occurs with several generations of Ubuntu. Since I can't disable the NIC in the BIOS, and there's no way to tell Ubuntu to not load a certain module via a kernel command line option, there's no way at all to install Ubuntu.
