Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

A user has an Asus W6F series laptop with an ICH7 Audio chipset which fails to produce any sound under Linux. It works in Windows, but neither in Edgy (installed system) or Feisty (2007-03-16 Live CD). I'm attaching the usual DebuggingSoundProblems-requested information.

ubuntu@ubuntu:~$ tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
Mixers:
0: Realtek ALC861
ubuntu@ubuntu:~$

There is no /etc/asound.conf or ~/.asoundrc*

We seem to have several other cases where sound has stopped working with Realtek ALC*** mixers. I'm going to start marking them as duplicates.

It unfortunately appears that this bug is not yet resolved. Does this issue still exist in the Hardy Heron 8.04 LTS release?

If so, the Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Alpha2 is also scheduled for release today. It will appear at the following when available: http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/alpha2 . It contains the actively developed 2.6.26 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if some could test this upcoming release via a LiveCD and verify if the issue still exists. If so, please include the appropriate debugging information as outlined at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingSoundProblems . Thanks in advance.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The 18 month support period for Feisty Fawn 7.04 has reached it's end of life - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.04-end-of-life . As a result we are closing the linux-source-2.6.20 task. Additionally, we haven't received any feedback to the previous requests so I'm closing the "linux" task for now. If this bug can be confirmed to still exist with the most recent Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release that just came out, please feel free to set the status of the "linux" task back to "New". Thanks.

Seems I did not read the howto correctly, and am unable to get the tutorial working (located here https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto ) Specifically the part where I compile the alsa-lib. I did have sound working before the attempt, but now I have no sound at all. is there any way to get myself back to where I was before without a complete reinstall.

Ubuntu 8.10 x64 on Toshiba A134-S4487

FYI the problem I was trying to solve by compiling this had to do with the headphone jack not switching off the main speakers.

Sorry, I just needed to read a bit more, I fixed the above problem by reinstalling my version of linux-image. Sorry for the wasted post.
