I did find a workaround: remounting the errant device in sync mode solves the issue completely. The write speed is still a bit slower than on windows (around 700kB/s instead of 1500), but not as slow as USB 1.1.

The magic incantation:
sudo mount -o remount,sync /dev/sdh1
