Bug Description

When I shut down it gets to "Will halt now" and hangs. The keyboard lights flash once as though rebooting or something but the machine doesn't halt.

Dapper, updated daily, x86.

I recently installed SuSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 on this same box and it shuts down fine.

Are you still experiencing this issue?

The issue still exists in Edgy release. Will try updated edgy and feisty today.

Issue still exists in Feisty. I did a clean install of Edgy, updated it to test there, and the updated to Feisty to test this. In all conditions the issue still exists.

Happy to help, just tell me what you need from me.

I noticed today that I also can't Suspend or Hibernate this box and that when I try to there's a kernel panic from an ACPI exception. Apparently when the kernel detects a Dell GX240 it forces acpi=ht. Apparently this means "Use ACPI boot table parsing, but don't enable ACPI interpreter."

Does Ubuntu not have any fallbacks for non-acpi machines?

Your bug seems to be a duplicate of bug #43961, some people report that the problem is fixed for them under Feisty (Final Release), if that's not the case for you, could you attach the output of :

$ lspci -vv > lspci-vv.log
$ lspci -vvn > lspci-vvn.log
$ dmesg > dmesg.log
$ lshal > lshal.log

to bug #43961 with your `uname -a`

Thank you.

Bug still exists. The kernel has the GX240 blacklisted because of some buginess in the ACPI implementation on that motherboard so it disables it. That means that ACPI calls won't work and probably never will.

Really the bug is this: Ubuntu only uses ACPI to halt, even if ACPI isn't present. I don't know if that's the case for the other reporters in bug #43961 but it's fairly likely. I will leave it to you, Philip, to judge if the problem this is in fact a duplicate based on this information and to break the duplicate link if it is not and post my thoughts there if it is.

Hello,

Bug 41681 (no power down with shutdown) has not been fixed for me in
Feisty....
The PC is not old, it's becoming an antique.

ehutch@Windy-Hill :~$ uname -a
Linux Windy-Hill 2.6.20-15-generic #2 SMP Sun Apr 15 07:36:31 UTC 2007
i686 GNU/Linux

I have attached the output of the script below (as suggested by Philip
Paquette in a note yesterday).

$ lspci -vv > lspci-vv.log
$ lspci -vvn > lspci-vvn.log
$ dmesg > dmesg.log
$ lshal > lshal.log

I'm not exactly sure what there is in these logs that may be of help,
but it is simple enough to provide them. I hope they will be of interest.

The upgrade from Edgy to Feisty was amazingly easy. As far as I know
there were no problems with any programs or data. I'm impressed....

Bug 41681 is bothersome but not critical for me.
