Acer Aspire 5050 - hda-intel sound doesn't work (Realtek ALC883 codec)

I installed Ubuntu 7.04 on this Acer Aspire 5050 notebook and after
install, the sound worked fine, than after installing all the updates
the sound stopped working and produced these errors during the startup.
I have another laptop that's an LG (imported from Korea) and it has the
exact same sound card and it works fine, even after install all the
updates for Ubuntu. Not sure what all I need to provide here.

These errors show up during boot time

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducable with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. I tried to run the live CD and Gnome will start, but after logging it, it'll display the background than it will go back to the login screen. I can't get to a TTY session either, it just locks up. Any ideas?

I was able to get the live CD working by using graphics safe mode. The sound issue doesn't appear to be resolved from the live CD. So, there is so more information for you.

Could you try to install the backport module by doing this :
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-generic
Then reboot and test if sound works.

If it doesn't work, edit this file :
sudo gedit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
and modify the following line :
options snd-hda-intel
so that it looks like :
options snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire
the reboot and test if sound works.

If it doesn't work, repeat the preceding procedure with "model=acer"

THANKS! This appears to have fixed the issue. I installed the backport module and that didn't fix it. I edited alsa-base and 'options snd-hda-intel' was missing all together so I just added 'options snd-hda-intel model=acer-aspire' and rebooted. Now all is good and those errors at boot time no longer show up :)

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. This is still an issue. I'm currently using 8.04 and the previous fix hasn't worked yet, though, I haven't spent much time on it to fix it. I will do some testing for you though to try and help out with this bug.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'.
