Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.20

My TV card Pinnacle 310i works fine as far as viewing DVB-t television.
I need to add saa7134-dvb into /etc/modules, place dvb-fe-tda10046.fw into /lib/firmware/2.6.20-16-generic and then reboot, and the card is installed and works fine.
I do sudo cat /proc/bus/input/devices and the remote is recognised and an event# assigned.
I do cat /dev/input/event# with zero output from the remote. If I try with an event# for the mouse or the keyboard, there is much output.
I have tried the various input tools Gerd Knorr, from LIRC people, etc
I have tried installing LIRC and lircd as per their instructions.
I have looked at the source for the input layer, and the source for the dvb.
I have tried this card on an ASUS mbrd, an Intel mbrd.
I have tried changing PCI slots.
In all cases, I point the remote control at the ir detector and - nothing.
Regards,
Timf
(My first bug report - I will attempt to attach dmesg.log, lspci-vvnn.log, syslog.log uname-a.log version.log)

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this bug to the new "linux" package. However, development has already began for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. It would be helpful if you could test the upcoming release and verify if this is still an issue - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . If the issue still exists, please update this report by changing the Status of the "linux" task from "Incomplete" to "New". We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Thanks!

Sorry, I've learnt a lot since reporting this bug.
The bug still exists, but it is in the linux kernel, from v4l-dvb saa7134 driver
and is to to do with the i2c section.
Thus, it will carry on with all new releases.

Timf

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

Hi Leann,

Since reporting this bug, I have conducted further investigation.
The bug exists in the/any new linux kernel.

It is the result of the v4l-dvb->saa7134->ir-kbd-i2c module.
This module is supposed to provide for i2c remote controls,
as opposed to gpio remote controls.

It has never worked properly, and now it doesn't work at all.

Hence, no saa7134 i2c remote control works at all, and these remote
controls fill logs with "unknown key pressed" messages
unless the specific card's remote control is disabled in the
source code.

No-one at video4linux or linuxtv is interested, and I don't have the
necessary
i2c gear to repair this module.

Thus, it is not specifically an ubuntu bug, it is a kernel bug,
and will continue with each new kernel version.

Regards,
Tim Farrington

Hi Timf,

Thanks for the update. You mentioned speaking to the video4linux and linuxtv folks, just out of curiosity, was this via an upstream bug report at bugzilla.kernel.org or another upstream bug tracker? If not, it might be good to at least open the upstream bug report. I realize it may not get much attention but at least it will be formally opened as an issue upstream. Thanks.

You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you.

This bug report is being closed because we received no response to the previous inquiry for information. Please reopen if this is still an issue in the current Ubuntu release, Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. If the issue remains in Jaunty, please test the latest upstream kernel build - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . To reopen the bug, click on the current status under the Status column and change the status back to "New". Thanks!

I have similar problem, with Pinnacle 310i TV card installed. Occurring random input, looks like kbd input generated by "somebody else", periodically in 1-3 secs hits key "í" (Czech layout, or "9" international layout). Key "9" on terminal state. For testing I tried LiveCD 8.04, 9.04,9.10. Still affect me, unable upgrade from 8.10, this is only stable for me.
Today have tested with TV card removed and LiveCD 9.04 is stable !! This confirm my estimate after comparing diff between dmesgs. Only 8.10 not identified ir input from TV card, therefore system is stable for me.
All version of dmesg and procbus listing are enclosed.
