Bug Description

TOSHIBA A200 satellite
Feisty 7.04
No sound

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

this card seems to work for other people with feisty if they add a line to the etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base file
No luck for me.

in my volume control prefs there are two possible devices intel HDA (alsa mixer) which has only two tracks to choose from Master and PCM the other device is Realtek ID (oss Mixer) and only one track Volume. Shouldn't there be more tracks to choose from for the Intel HDA

Willing to try anything to get my machine making sounds.
Please Help.

Could you please name your file attachments so it is indicative what exactly they are? You can modify the attachment names by clicking on "Bug attachments" in the left hand column. Hello,
I also have a Realtek ID 268 chip, on a COMPAQ Presario v6500 laptop.
According to alsa-project site, this chip isn't supported yet (even with patches, which I have tried).
and the realtek site's FAQ says :

>> Realtek is now working on Linux driver for ALS100/ALS100+/ALS300/ALS4000

In my case, the sound works but it is very only very low, I actually can't hear anything with headphones, I need to plug my speakers and put the volume as loud as possible to hear some scratchy, unclean sound :(

Oh and I am running gutsy beta with all available updates as of now.

and
Realtk ID 268 (OSS Mixer) - with one slider pair, Volume.

You could try the steps listed in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/116326 and see if that fixes it. I have the same card in my toshiba A205 and installing the latest release candidate for the driver fixed it for me

Hi Rajniks.
I'm replying here just so you'll see it, though it looks like they want
us discussing this on the bug report of which they have determined
this to be a duplicate. You might even find you get more success
with a general appeal for help if you place it on the generic Ubuntu forums.
Nonetheless, as a fellow Aspire laptop owner running Gutsy32 I can't help
but want to tell you how I got sound.
I simply installed the newer Alsa per their instructions
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Matrix:Module-hda-intel
It's a bit techy, particular if you're new to Linux and struggle with privileges.
On the other hand, I've tried Hardy32 Alpha 5 and the sound
works right out of the box. At this late date, you may simply choose
to wait for Hardy's official release next month.

I trouble with a fresh Gutsy install on my Toshiba a200 (with intel's IHC8 family soundcard).

my speakers worked but my headphone jack wasn't being detected or showing up in the alsa mixer, nor was it working. Speakers didn't mute when I plugged my phones in.

But this fixes a lot of problems with these sound cards, because it ends up hooking you up with the latest alsa drivers, which i found hard to install elsewhere...

I have Acer Aspire 5520 laptop and on it this sound card. I had no sound on slackware 12, when i installed new alsa problem was still there.
Then i found some tutorial about installing slackware 12 on acer aspire 5520. And there was suggested to install new kernel 2.6.24. and that finally fixed my problem. But its very hard to install new kernel on Ubuntu. I suggest you who use Ubuntu to wait for Hardy Heron. It will have newer kernel version.

Well, it's not so difficult, if you can manage with a standard kernel (I
mean, no ubuntu additions). I have a little howto here:

https://www.dea.icai.upcomillas.es/romano/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Kernel

On the other hand, it's true that Hardy will come with the new kernel,
although on my laptop 2.6.24 is ok for sound, but not for mic input. You
have to install alsa-1.0.16 for this, on top of kernel 2.6.24. So if you
decide to go for a custom kernel, 2.6.25 (still on -rc phase) is the
best one.
