Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-image-2.6.20-15-generic

Feisty installed on a D900t laptop (like Sager 9860, Peutium 4, ALC 880 realtek sound)
Sound simply does not work. When I try to play sound :

aplay /usr/share/sounds/generic.wav
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:864:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:550: audio open error: invalid argument

This bug appeared in Dapper with my laptop, sound was ok before. In dapper I noticed that compiling alsa from source with debug=detect allowed the sound to work, though at each end of sound, a bunch of debug info appeared in dmeg etc... but at least it did work. It was the same in Edgy.

Now it does not work at all even with debug activated.

I must also mention that surprisingly, alsamixer/amixer seem to work ok, and do not give any suspect results.

Eric

PS : here are some more info :

I forgot to say that I tried several workarounds without success :
- pci=noacpi boot
- several models of hda-intel driver
- position_fix=1 in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
- kernel driver and latest driver (1.0.14rc4)

I found a workaround after discussion with Tobin Davis from the Alsa Project team on alsa-dev mailing-list.

Using probe_mask = 1 as an option for mudule insertion gets sound working. I don't know yet if it is ONLY a workaround of a bug, or a real solution (without limitation in sound system).

After some more tests and discussion on alsa-dev ML, I can consider the solution provided above as a valuable workaround. I think that the bug can be cancelled from launchpad, because probe_mask=1 allows sound to work. Moreover it seems that this has nothing to do with the kernel. Only Alsa modifications may make this behaviour to disappear.
This seems to be related to the fact that the sound card is a mixed card "sound & modem" such as described in

eric@gondor:~$ aplay -l
**** Liste des PLAYBACK périphériques ****
carte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], périphérique 0 : ALC880 Analog [ALC880 Analog]
  Sous-périphériques: 1/1
  Sous-périphérique: #0: subdevice #0
carte 0: Intel [HDA Intel], périphérique 6 : Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Sous-périphériques: 1/1
  Sous-périphérique: #0: subdevice #0

So, as a conclusion, in order to have such a sound card to work it is necessary to have the following line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base :

options snd-hda-intel model=clevo probe_mask=1

the model may vary depending on the laptop, but "probe_mask=1" IS ncecessary.

For more information, see alsa-dev mailing-list archive for "Alsa 1.0.13 (and others) does not work on ALC880" topic.
